Abstract:


Reflecting on the multifaceted role of Education Program Coordinators (EPCs) in Graduate Medical Education (GME), this perspective piece offers insights drawn from the author's tenure at the Mayo Clinic. The complexity of the EPC role is explored, emphasizing its pivotal impact on program success and stakeholder relationships. Key attributes for success are discussed, including the importance of a robust support network, the cultivation of confidence, and the development of collaborative partnerships with program directors. Flexibility is identified as a crucial skill for navigating the dynamic demands of educational programs. An informal survey of program directors reveals the complementary nature of the EPC's skills in enhancing program directors' strengths and addressing their weaknesses. The article concludes with recommendations for EPCs to engage in candid conversations with program directors to align expectations and promote continuous improvement, ultimately enhancing the educational environment and supporting the physicians they serve.
